OK, girls and boys, back to the 60s: This Paul Simon composition was recorded in 1966 and released in "Bookends" in '68. It deals with the passage of (wasted?) time - looking for something or someone ideal as time runs out and the seasons pass by. Peaked at #13 on Billboard. A very respectable hard rock cover by The Bangles in '87 for the "Less Than Zero" soundtrack, outselling the original (#2 on Billboard). Most of the bridge was removed in their version. Chicago-based folkie Susan Werner sang a beautiful rendition for her 2009 "Classics". Les Fradkin did a masterful Rickenbacker-12 cover on his '06 "Jangleholic" album. Song? Answer: "A Hazy Shade of Winter" by Simon and Garfunkel. No qualifiers - Susanna Hoffs rocks! Nobody, and I mean nobody, looks better with a Rickenbacker strapped on than Susanna! This song was one of those "tests of manhood" (argh, argh!) growing up - you HAD to be able to play the lead guitar riff and sing the lyrics simultaneously if you wanted to call yourself a geeeeeetar player. "I'll Do My Crying in the Rain" by The Everly Brothers.

OK, girls and boys, back to the 60s: It was 1961 and Brill Building publisher Aldon Music had two killer teams writing for them - Carole King/Gerry Goffin and Howard Greenfield/Jack Keller. On a whim, they decided to "switch partners" for one day. King wrote the music and Greenfield the lyrics for a poignant ballad about lost love. This was their one and only collaboration. First recorded by The Everly Brothers, it peaked at #6 on Billboard's Hot 100. Other memorable cover versions include Tammy Wynette ('81), Carole King ('83), Norwegian group A-ha ('90) and Art Garfunkel/James Taylor ('94). Song?
