OK, girls and boys, let's go way back: The two Jenkins brothers ran the George Hotel, a 16th century wayfarers' inn in North Yorkshire, England. The upright longcase timepiece in the lobby ran flawlessly for many years until the day one of the brothers died, when it started malfunctioning. Upon the second brother's passing it stopped keeping time and would never run again. A Connecticut-born abolitionist visited the hotel and was inspired to compose his best-loved song about the timepiece. It is written through the eyes of a grandson. Published in 1876, it was first sung by Sam Lucas and sold over 1 million copies of sheet music. Very popular among brass bands and bluegrass circles. Composer? Song?
